Rewilding project update – wildlife filming in Cornwall.

As an environment friendly film company in Cornwall, one of our great prides is our 6 acres of land on the West Penwith Moors. We call it J-Land. So we thought we would update you on our pet project.

Things have progressed amazingly since our first blog about this project.

Tree planting

Working with Forest for Cornwall and Woodland Trust, we have already planted over 1500 trees. These are all native species including Birch, Hawthorn,  Crab Apple, Hazel, Willow and Holly. We have also planted trees specifically to encourage pollinators. These native tree species flower in different seasons, providing nectar, pollen and nesting sites for pollinators all year round. And all this is in addition to the two hedges we have planted which serve as windbreaks, protecting the young saplings.

Though this summer proved very challenging. The drought meant that we had to spend whole days watering the young saplings to give them the best chance of survival. And then when the hosepipe ban came into force they were left to their own devices. But happily almost all have survived.

Visiting wildlife

Using two camera traps we are getting to know our local wildlife. We have resident foxes, a buzzard, and a pair of pheasants. Plus of course rabbits. And occasional visitors include badgers, an owl, and even on one occasion a deer. The two ponds that we have created are a major draw for all the creatures. We are now hoping that either the newts, frogs, or toads that we know live in and around the ponds will spawn this spring.

And for the first time last month we spotted a deer on the land! We are really starting to make a difference.
