We’ve been Climate Action filming in Cornwall on behalf of the Environment Agency this week. A new sea defence for EXO Environmental is being added to Newlyn Harbour. Brand new, state of the art “eco reefs” are being put in at the Newlyn breakwater. These use local materials and cutting edge technology Find out more about the project here on the Government website:

Locally sourced materials

They make the blocks from waste material from the quarry at Castle An Dinas. The team there mould and cure them into pyramid shapes structures. These will in time become artificial reefs. Their shape encourages marine life to grow and also protects the shore from erosion.

Day one

Time to don high viz, hard hats and steel toed boots! On Day One Fionn was up on the West Penwith Moors filming the 12 blocks in situ, documenting their trip down to Newlyn and then their deployment. He started early in a howling gale and horizontal rain showers. We had planned drone filming too – but not a chance of flying in 50mph plus winds!

Extremely difficult working conditions

Day two

And the following day, both Fionn and River were on location to film the action down in Newlyn. The engineering team timed the job for low tide when there was a window for them to install the defences.

It was quick work to lift the 12 granite blocks from the promenade in Penzance onto two smaller caterpillar track machines.

Moving blocks from local quarry along the beach

The team then picked them up,  carried them along the beach to be again lifted by a digger in the river and into position. Fionn and River captured footage from every angle as the team of engineers and heavy machinery workers carried out the job

Drone Filming

We couldn’t carry out any drone filming due to windy conditions. So we waited for a window in the weather and returned to capture drone footage both at the quarry and down at Newlyn Harbour.

Climate Action Filming

Climate action filming of initiatives based in Cornwall is one thing we enjoy doing. It is a particular passion of ours. Because one personal project is the rewilding of 6 acres of land near St Ives. We have worked with Ocean rebellion producing a video about oil pollution in Mauritius.  And last year we carried out Environmental filming for COP26

We look forward to working on more climate action filming in Cornwall and possibly more upcoming projects with EXO Environmental
